We build buffer nights in Leh first. From there, Nubra via Khardung La, Pangong as a separate push, or a slower monastery circuit if you prefer less driving. Motorbike groups and families need different pacing; we do not pretend otherwise.
Permits, oxygen awareness, and honest weather calls are part of the planning. If someone in your group struggles with altitude, we adjust — we do not push through for the sake of the itinerary.
Places people ask for most
Not a complete atlas — just the stops that come up again and again when we plan this region.
Leh
Base camp: monasteries nearby, markets, and the nights you need to acclimatise.
Nubra Valley
Sand dunes, Diskit, and a different desert under snow peaks.
Pangong
The lake everyone wants — best with an overnight if roads and season allow.
Alchi / Likir / Hemis
Monastery days when you want culture over long transfers.
Tso Moriri
For longer trips when Pangong is not enough water for you.
Things worth doing
- Acclimatisation walks before any high pass
- A monastery morning that is not a five-stop blur
- Stargazing nights — the sky does half the work
- Local food that is gentle on the stomach at altitude
When to go
June to September is the main window. Shoulder weeks can be magical and quieter; winter is specialist territory.
